Locals perform dragon dance as part of the consecration ceremony of
dragon in Saiying town, Guizhou province on Jan. 31, 2006. The dragon
dance, also known as the dragon lantern dance, is a unique folk dance in
China. The performers wave props shaped like a dragon to the
accompaniment of drums and gongs, displaying a powerful and majestic
momentum. In the remote past the dragon dance was performed to pray for
rain and now became a major item of entertainment during festivals,
especially the Lantern Festival on the 15th day of the first lunar month.

traditional Changdian features, such as sugar crab apples with tempting
color and various styles of windmills, revealed their charms again.

showcase their traditional handicraft. As a symbolic temple fair in
ancient Beijing, the Changdian Temple Fair, together with temple fairs in
Nanjing Confucius Temple, Shanghai Temple of the City's Gods and Chengdu
Qingyang Palace, are reputed as "largest four temple fairs" in China.

China to build overall traffic network in tourism

www.chinanews.cn 2006-01-13 15:29:31

Chinanews, Jan. 13 C During the eleventh five-year period, China will
pay efforts to build a comprehensive transportation network so as to
improve China's tourism service in every aspect including outbound tours,
inbound tours and domestic tourist consumption.
Director of China National Tourism Administration Shao Qiwei made
statement at a ongoing, national tourist meeting.
He said that during the new five-year period, China would make sure that
development programs in air, railway and transportation departments would
complement each other. With more construction efforts put in civil air,
railway and water transport, the country aims to offer fast and
convenient transportation means for tourists, which include airline
branches, tourist trains, river cruise liners and luxury ocean liners.
To meet the demands of newly opened tourist destinations and new tourist
resource exploitations, China will support the opening of air flights to
Africa, East Europe and Latin America and increase flights to Europe, the
United States, Russia and East Asia.
The state will support branch lines transportations, increase chartered
flights and exploit chartered flight markets.
The state will also take an active, guiding role to explore ways for the
development of private-owned airlines, low-cost airlines and personal
chartered flight services that aim at commercial tour market.
By taking opportunities of the Beijing Olympic Games and the Shanghai
World Expo', China will urge to improve tourist information center at
international airports and make them operate in line with international
custom, from service content, programming, to service modes and operation.

DPRK nuke talks facing tough times: China

www.chinanews.cn 2006-01-11 09:37:07

(Source: Reuters/China Daily)

BEIJING, Jan. 11 - China said on Tuesday DPRK nuclear talks were facing a
"difficult situation", a day after Pyongyang declared it saw no point in
returning to six-party negotiations because of U.S. sanctions.
Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Kong Quan made the comments as China
has been playing host to the six-party talks, which group the two Koreas,
the United States, Japan and Russia, and which last met in November.
The six were meant to meet again early this year to try to make progress
on DPRK's agreement in principle to dismantle its nuclear weapons in
exchange for aid and security guarantees, but that now looks unlikely due
to Pyongyang's anger over Washington's crackdown on its finances.
Kong said the US sanctions against the DPRK companies had introduced
complications on the Six-Party Talks.
"My view is that we are facing a difficult situation now but all parties
should make efforts so as to resume the next round of talks as soon as
possible," Kong told a regular news conference.
Kong declined to say whether China felt the U.S. sanctions against DPRK
should be linked with the six-party talks, saying only that the sanctions
and DPRK's objections to them were "a new, complicating factor".
"The Chinese government attaches importance to the combat of money
laundering and other financial crimes," he said.
The United States has clamped down on companies it suspects of helping
DPRK in counterfeiting, money laundering and the drug trade, and says the
sanctions are a separate matter from six-party talks.
Kong said China was staying in touch with all of the parties concerned,
with its chief negotiator Wu Dawei having recently met his Japanese and
South Korean counterparts.
The American embassy in Beijing also confirmed that U.S. chief negotiator
Christopher Hill would visit China on Thursday, following visits to Tokyo
and Seoul, to discuss the fate of the nuclear talks.
Kong Quan was also asked to comment on the foreign media report
concerning the proposed visit to China by Kim Jong-il, leader of the
Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).
Kong Quan said that he had "no specific information" about the trip.
"Of course Kim Jong-il plans to visit China," Kong said.
"But as for the exact time of the visit, I will release that information
when I am authorized."

winter renders a novel mode of agricultural tourism which used to boom

China GDP grew 9.8% in 2005, latest estimate

www.chinanews.cn 2006-01-02 14:47:11

Chinanews, Jinan, Jan. 2 (By Yu Jingbo) - The National Development and
Reform Commission's (NDRC) deputy director Ou Xinqian revealed at today's
conference on national critical coal production, transportation and
demand linkages that according to preliminary estimate, China's GDP
growth rate reached 9.8% in 2005. This is the latest official estimate
after China adjusted its GDP figures. Prior to this, the Chinese
government forecast a 9.4% GDP growth for 2005.
An official with the National Bureau of Statistics revealed recently that
China will modify its 2005 economic statistics and the tenth
five-year-plan period (2001-2005) on the basis of the latest Economic
Census results. Ou Xinqian said today that major goals of economic and
social development in the tenth five-year-plan could be fulfilled
smoothly.
Ou said that according to preliminary estimate, China's consumer price
index (CPI) growth has been kept under 2% in 2005. Its investment in
fixed assets was up 25%, and its total volume of retail sales of consumer
goods rose 13%. These figures were the same as the forecasts made by the
Chinese government before the result of the Economic Census was released.
The official forecast also points out that in 2006, China's domestic
demand for coal will reach approximately 2.17 billion tons, and coal
export will be about 80 megatons. The overall demand for coal is expected
to reach 2.25 billion tons, and the growth rate of coal demand will be
lower than that of the past few years.
The conference was jointly convened by NDRC, the Ministry of Railways,
the Ministry of Communications, and relevant ministries and commissions
of coal and electric power.

China trade surplus to exceed US$100 bln

www.chinanews.cn 2005-12-20 11:02:49

Chinanews, Dec. 20 C Chinas trade surplus would exceed 100 billion US
dollars this year and it showed three characters, said vice Minister of
Commerce Yu Guangzhou at a forum on enterprise development.
On the forum held on Sunday, Yu said most of Chinas trade surplus came
from the European countries and the United States. Chinas trade surplus
to the United States is expected to exceed 100 billion US dollars this
year while trade surplus to the European countries would be more than 63
billion US dollars.
Meanwhile, the countrys trade deficit was mainly from Japan, North
Korea and Southeast Asian nations.
The second character was that trade surplus concentrated on the
processing and trade sector, which turned more than 125 billion US
dollars, far more than the common trade area of 30 billion US dollars.
In addition, most of the trade surplus was made by privately-run
enterprises or foreign enterprises. Statistics showed that from January
to November, trade surplus made by collectively-run or private
enterprises was more than 60 billion US dollars while such figure in
foreign enterprises reached over 50 billion US dollars.

When can China's basic education cultivate world masters?

www.chinanews.cn 2005-12-15 17:57:09

Chinanews, Shanghai, Dec. 15 C Why a large education nation like China
does not have so many world renowned scientists as the U.S.?
Educationists from China and the U.S. try to find out answerd to
questions like this at the first Sino-US round table discussion forum on
basic education strategy.
The forum, held on Wednesday, was jointly organized by the Education
Development Research Center of the Ministry of Education in China and the
Postgraduate School of the University of Pennsylvania in the U.S. It aims
to find out similarities and differences that exist between two countries
in their educational system.
China has good basic education
While some educationists in China keep a skeptical eye to the country's
educational system in recent years, their American counterparts gave a
positive answer to the basic education in China, saying that it was still
one of the best in the world.
An American educationist told reporters that basic education in the U.S.
was criticized in recent years due to its political tendency. On the
contrary, Chinese government's stress on basic education and qualified
teachers set a good example.
Genius education at primary stage
At primary and middle school, pupils in China did better in math and
science lessons than the U.S. pupils. However, few grow to be world
"masters". Why? Educationists attributed this to China's stress on
examination rather than students' interest.
Deputy Director of the postgraduate school of Pennsylvania University
said American teachers encourage students to focus on their strong
points. In China, students are driven to study to pass the entrance
examination test and they do not pay much attention to their own interest.
Quality education expected development in the future
At the forum, director of the Education Development Research Center Zhang
Li said in the future, the research center would make its middle and
long-term basic education strategy by taking some references from other
countries including the U.S.

Qing imperial inspector's office renovated

Imperial inspector's office of the Qing Dynasty (1616-1911AD), a famous
ancient building located in Jinan's Pearl Spring Scenic Area, took on a
new look after renovation on Dec. 13. The renovation project for the main
part of the ancient building has been completed and is awaiting
inspection. As one of the few ancient buildings in Jinan City, the Qing
imperial inspector's office was originally the mansion of a seignior of
the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644AD). Well-known ministers of the Qing Dynasty
like Ding Baozhen once handled government affairs here. In the Qing
Dynasty, an imperial inspector is the most senior provincial official.

Lanzhou's traffic evokes worries

www.chinanews.cn 2005-12-09 17:01:21

Traffic jams were seen in Lanzhou streets on Dec. 8. It was learned from
Lanzhou's communications department that nearly 90 new cars rushed to
streets each day recently. Cars possessed by enterprises and individuals
constitute 85% of the total registered automobiles. Increasing new cars
have posed great pressure on the traffic in Lanzhou's urban areas, which
is not that free-flowing. As a result, traffic jams become more than more
severe.
