Chinese auto industry enters era of export

www.chinanews.cn 2006-03-01 16:42:00

Chinanews, March 1 - According to customs statistics, China exported
170,000 units of integral cars in 2005, surging 120.5% year on year.
Exported large and medium motor-driven passenger cars accounted for 6,433
units. China's export volume of autos exceeded import volume for the
first time.
Performance of China's auto enterprises has attracted attention from the
globe. In fact, China's commercial vehicle enterprises made out their
schedules for exports earlier than other auto enterprises. After a few
years of grope and struggle in overseas markets, Chinese auto enterprises
such as Yutong Group and Xiamen King Long United Automotive Industry Co.,
Ltd. have gained much experience and at present the performance of their
products is nearing that of European and American automakers.
China's passenger car export grew 63.68% on average since 2000 and shows
an uptrend year after year. China-made passenger cars were exported to 58
countries and regions in 2003 and the number of export destinations
jumped to 71 in 2004. At present, China-made autos can be found in over
170 countries and regions in the world.
In the domestic market, Yutong and King Long have established a favorable
enterprise image. On the other hand, in the international market, Yutong
has initially set up export network in nearly 20 countries and regions.
In Cuba, South America, Russia, Egypt and Dubai which feature strong
marketing radiation, Yutong has built six central bases of auto
components and its spare part storage in Cuba has been put into operation.
During the course of the eleventh five-year plan, China will strive to
boost its exports of integral cars and auto components by over 40%
annually on average. Its auto export value will have amounted to US$70
billion by 2010. Moreover, China will support exports of enterprises with
independent brands and research and development of products with
independent intellectual property rights. In addition, China will make
efforts to increase the proportion of self-developed auto exports to more
than 10% of the total trade volume in the globe. Passenger car
manufacturers such as Yutong and King Long are striding towards this goal.

Archaeologists found a large well-preserved site of Han Dynasty
(206BC-220AD) farmlands and courtyards at the ancient Yellow River course
in Sanyang Village of Liangzhuang Town in the south of Henan Province's
Neihuang County in 2003. After nearly two years of exploration and
excavation, the Henan Institute of Cultural and Historical Relics and
Archaeology has confirmed the bases of seven courtyards and cleaned up an
area of about 9,000 square meters at present. This discovery reveals the
production and life of low and middle-class populace and unveils
courtyards and farmlands in the Han Dynasty, filling up the blank in the
archaeological history. Pictured, archeologists were mopping up the No. 3
courtyard.

Many mothers-to-be and fathers-to-be were practicing gymnastics for
pregnant women together in Suzhou Medical Center for Maternal and
Children's Health on Feb. 18th. It was learned that such gymnastics will
help relax expectant mothers' muscles and joints on waist and pelvis so
as to prevent muscular fatigue and function decline due to weight growth
and change of center of gravity during pregnancy. Moreover, such
gymnastics can not only help these couples get well-prepared for the
delivery but also strengthen their relationship.

Retail sales to hit 10 trillion yuan by 2010

www.chinanews.cn 2006-02-13 09:48:16

(Source: China Daily)

Citizens shop in a super market in Weifang, East China's Shandong
Province in this photo taken on January 10, 2006.

Feb. 13 - China's retail sales will continue to grow at a fast rate over
the next few years, thanks to the government's increasing emphasis on
stimulating consumer demand.
Huang Hai, assistant minister of commerce, said the nation's retail
sales, an important indicator for the consumption demand, will grow at an
average annual rate of more than 11 per cent during the 11th Five-Year
Plan (2006-10) period.
"By 2010, the country's retail sales will reach over 10 trillion yuan
(US$1.2 trillion)," Huang was quoted yesterday as saying by Xinhua.
Earlier figures from the National Bureau of Statistics indicate that
China's retail sales rose 12.9 per cent year-on-year to 6.7 trillion yuan
(US$828.3 billion) last year.
Such a strong growth, fuelled mainly by rising household incomes and more
stable consumer prices, is just what the government wants to see, said Qi
Jingmei, a senior economist with the State Information Centre.
"The current economy relies too much on fixed asset investment, which
results in both overcapacity and trade friction," she said.
In developed countries such as the United States, consumption usually
accounts for 70 to 80 per cent of the gross domestic product (GDP), but
it accounted for just 33.3 per cent of China's GDP last year.
The government wants to let consumption play a more important role in its
future economic growth, Qi said.
Finance Minister Jin Renqing said late last year that the country's
fiscal policy will help boost consumption demand during the 11th
Five-Year Plan period.
Such fiscal measures will include an increased spending in the fields of
education, health care and social security, he said.
Zhuang Jian, a senior economist with the Asian Development Bank's
Resident Mission in China, said Jin's pledge is good news for both urban
and rural residents.
"With less financial burden, people will be more willing to spend," he
said.
The government has already taken a series of other measures to adjust the
relationship between investment and consumption, Zhuang said.
As of January 1 this year, the government raised the threshold on
personal income tax from 800 yuan (US$99) to 1,600 yuan (US$197), which
has increased the people's spending capacity by letting them keep more
money.
The government also gave up agriculture taxes and made compulsory school
education free in rural areas, which saves money for rural citizens.
