China not pursuing expansion of forex

www.chinanews.cn 2006-04-06 14:08:46

Chinanews, April 6 C China is not pursuing expansion of its foreign
exchange reserves, a vice chief of the central bank said on Wednesday.
"There is no comparability between countries in terms of foreign exchange
reserves and China is not seeking a specific target for the size of its
foreign exchange reserves," Wu Xiaoling, vice-governor of the People's
Bank of China, said in an interview.
China's foreign exchange reserves reached 853.6 billion US dollars by the
end of February, surpassing Japan's for the first time.
Wu said the changes in a nation's foreign exchange reserves reflect its
macroeconomic performance and balance of internatinal payments and there
is no scientific way to measure the appropriate level of its holding.
The rapid accumulation of China's foreign exchange reserves was a result
of a number of facotrs including the policies of encouraging forein
investment and exports, and the country's "easy entry tough exit"
currency policy. A deficit in internaional balance of payments is not
good, but excessive surplus is not desirable either, Wu said.
Wu added that the People's Bank of China has put forward a new proposal
on currency, which would allow businesses and individuals to hold more
forex, a shift from stockpiling forex by the government.
The People's Bank of China has issued a series of policies, including
loosening capital control on business forex account opening and the
balance limitation, individuals buying, and the forex account opening,
and amount of the capital for companies' overseas investments.

Beijing uses Olympic security standard in Super League

www.chinanews.cn 2006-03-21 17:44:49

Chinanews, Mar. 21 C A Super League soccer match was held Sunday at the
Fengtai Stadium when security standard used in the 2008 Olympic Games was
first applied in the match.
Some 1,200 security guards stationed on the field and there were civil
policemen standing on every platform in the stadium, holding a video
camera in hand to record down any misbehavior from "suspected soccer
hooligans".
A policeman on duty told reporters that he was just started to learn how
to use the video camera and so far, he had not recorded any wrongdoings
from suspected soccer hooligans.
In case there is any misbehavior in the stadium, the recordings will be
used to help police to panelize soccer hooligans. More camera eyes will
be installed at major roads near the stadium.
The security scheme for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games are graded into
four levels, A, B, C, and D, and each grade is divided into three
sub-levels with different numbers of police force, volunteers and
security guards being allocated. The Sunday match security scheme applied
grade A level in sub-level one, where policemen dressed in plain clothes
and uniforms were allocated to the stadium to keep the match order
together with 1,200 security guards. Although Sunday's match went on
smoothly, people from the Beijing municipal public security bureau were
not satisfied with the match order, saying that improvement should be
made in later matches, "Many soccer fans still boo at guest team and
shout out offensive words", they said.

Following the dust storm and muddy rain on Friday night, Beijing was
swept by snowfalls Saturday noon.

March 11 - Following the dust storm and muddy rain on Friday night,
Beijing was swept by snowfalls Saturday noon.
But the snow only lasted for a short time, melting away in the warmish
weather.
Saturday's snow confounded expectations that the snow of the last day of
February would put an end to the snow season and signal that Spring was
on its way.
Earlier, the China Meteorological Administration forecast that most parts
of northern China would be choked with dust and sand from late this week
to Saturday.
